Scotland is a hospitable, accessible and exciting land which lies to the North of Hadrian’s Wall.
The Highlands and Islands occupy about two-thirds of the total area of Scotland. It is a very distinctive region. It contains the oldest rocks, the highest mountains, the deepest lochs, the most extensive moorlands, the longest and deepest sea-inlets and some of the wildest, most beautiful and spectacular scenery of any part of the British Isles.
If you study a page in your atlas which shows Europe and the British Isles, you will see that Scotland lies in the extreme north-western part of the continent. If you turn to a map of Scotland you will see that the most northerly island in Shetland is not very far from the Arctic Circle. Notice also how far to the west this region lies compared with the rest of Great Britain. The West Highlands and Islands are in full contact with the westerly winds and frequent gales which blow from the Atlantic Ocean. The Highlands and Islands stretch northwards and westwards from the rest of Great Britain, making them exposed and isolated.

Down through the ages, the Scots have been providers of useful and influential historic breakthroughs.
As a nation of inventors (penicillin, television, chloroform, the steam engine, logarithms, etc to name a few) we have given the world major practical creations.

Gaelic was the national language of all Scotland north of the Forth and Clyde until the 11th century, and it remained the national language of half of Scotland until the depopulation that began to take place in the Highlands and Islands from the 18th century onwards.
