These are fascinating photographs because they don’t only show the past but can give revealing insights in many different ways.
It feels like going back in time as it has such a rich history, and so many reminders of it can still be seen in the historic buildings; around Scotland.
You can’t turn back the clock, but you can combine the best from our more natural past with modern technology to shape the future. The best way forward to a sustainable future is perhaps combines a careful choice of old and new.
For centuries these towns and villages, spreads out all over Scotland, places like Hawick, Dunblane, Coupar Angus, Kirriemuir, Nairn, Inverurie, Beauly, Auchterarder – the list is endless – were mini-meccas for significant numbers of people, for whom a trip into one of the main cities was too big an expedition.

You’d hold up your hands and bless General Wade!
(The first properly constructed roads in the Highlands were built by General Wade in the 18th century and prompted the jingle.)
